My mom is obsessed with Jane Austen these days. Well, really just Pride and Prejudice. And only on DVD (so far). After successfully mastering the art of how to insert a DVD into her new Christmas-gift DVD player, my technology-adverse mother has been exploring the wonderful world of DVD special features. Or "that extra stuff that's not the movie," as she says. Almost every day my mom watches the Kiera Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice, and about every other day she watches the BBC Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. I suggested to her recently that she and I read all six Austen novels and watch as many of the Austen film adaptations we could find. She loved the idea.
I picked up a Sense and Sensibility book/DVD (the Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet version) combo for ten bucks at MovieStop last week and mailed it to her, so we're going to start with that one. So, after all these years of watching Austen film adaptations and reading about Austen, I am finally, at 40 years of age, going to read my first Jane Austen novel. I'm excited!
